Netatmo Welcome: The Smart Home Camera in Test

"Smart Home" is rapidly becoming an issue and also at this year's IFA in Berlin have numerous exhibitors presenting new products that are to connect your home and thus make smarter and more efficient, but also safer. A pioneer in Smart Home is Netatmo.

The guys have provided me your best horse in the stable, which Netatmo Welcome, the first smart home camera with face detection, kindly for a test. And this is my opinion:

Design and processing

The design is probably the first thing that catches your eye when a Welcome. Here Netatmo has hit the mark with me. The golden aluminum with the minimalist design I like very much. No frills, nich an inordinate amount of plastic and only the most important controls. Given the compact form factor. So should be.

For processing, there is not much to say. That's how the design, excellent. Nothing creaks or loose, the whole device feels very valuable.

Here Netatmo has also done a great job. Once you have you loaded the app specially developed, it depends the camera to the power and start the app. You will then by a few steps passed, which connects your camera linked to the app and via WLAN to the Internet. The whole process takes no 3 minutes. If the WLAN does not work immediately, Netatmo lays still in a network cable, so you can connect the camera to the emergency directly to the router. It's that simple.

The camera does basically everything you expect from a "surveillance camera", but just smart.

Once the Welcome detects motion, you will be notified not only by push, they will also start an immediate recording until the movement is over. This clip you can then anytime See you on the road. So you always learn when someone rumhüpft before your door or if someone comes home and someone goes. As memory serves, incidentally, the included 8GB SD card. Again Netatmo has thought.

In addition, the Welcome offers a HD stream, one can at any time monitor via the app. But you also learn when the camera is, for example, separated from the wireless network, or connected to it.

In the app you can even choose whether you want to be notified about movements always, or only when the house is empty. The settings are also available for the video recording. So you can determine whether the Welcome accommodates all movements, or only when the house is empty. So you save as memory.

This all works the way very reliable, as I have found. Both the push notifications, as well as picking up in movement.

As the first surveillance camera Welcome has a sophisticated face recognition. Join them a face, you can assign a name and whenever EureWelcome then sees this face is on the push notification of the respective name.

Thus, the Welcome is therefore not only a surveillance camera in the event of a burglary, etc., but also a useful tool in everyday life. You will then always learn as if and when your son comes home from school, or when your daughter came last night from partying.

But that's not all: In the app you can determine at every recorded person whenever you want like to be informed (On arrival, Never) and when the Welcome receives (Never; Upon arrival, Always).

Your already notice Netatmo has done a great job. You have not brought any semi-finished product on the market that is just over hyped. It all works as it should, very reliable, very mature and future-proof.

For me, although no one in the test time trying to break but I'm 100% certain that they would have informed me reliable.

The camera is easy to set up and the app is very feature rich. Overall, the Welcome is therefore a very useful tool in everyday life, especially for families with children or grandparents.

The price is 199 € (RRP), although probably for some a little high, but you get but the most sophisticated smart home camera currently available on the market.
