Discovering Safari ! What Internet browser to choose?
Discovering safari browser
If I'm talking about iPhone, iPad, iTunes, MacBook ... it certainly tells you something. Because even if you're not a fan of the Apple brand, there is not a week that goes by that we hear about a new product or a rumor regarding the release of a new product / service Apple. For example, last week, the new operating system Mac OS X Lion comes with a new version of Safari , browser created by Apple.
The history of the browser
The Safari browser was launched in 2003, while Microsoft increasingly forsaking the version of Internet Explorer dedicated to Mac (it also disappear June 13, 2003). With version 2, released in 2005, Safari was the first browser with RSS and a module including private browsing (no browsing trace are recorded on the computer used). version of Safari 3, launched in 2007, is particularly noted for its performance and speed of display pages that are well above those of its competitors at the time. Apple decided to offer a version compatible with Windows. Safari version 4.0 (June 8, 2009) obtains the result of 100/100 in Acid test (test analyzing the ability to display web pages in a browser). With version 5, offered from June 7, 2010, Safari improves its performance, integrates innovative functionality (Drive Mode, I will present later in this article) and a mechanism for extensions allow the user to customize their browser and to add functionality. Finally, a few days ago, July 20, 2011, to mark the launch of its new operating system Mac OS X Lion , Apple took the opportunity to propose a new version ( 5.1) browser even faster and integrating new features.
The main features of Safari
Safari has all the features essential to any browser worthy of the name: tabbed browsing, private browsing sessions to make surfing in confidence, managing favorites and RSS feeds, extensions to add new functions to the browser, a "panel" with the Top 10 most visited sites ... So far, nothing original. What really sets Safari to its competitors, have some "keys" particularly ergonomic or graphic. For example, the display of the 10 most visited sites is coupled with a visual history of the last sites visited. Then, at the management of favorites and RSS feeds, when you click on the bookmark icon (= an open book) page that appears strangely resembles iTunes (playback software and library management of multimedia Apple). SnapBack The module is linked to the search bar built into the browser:
I search and I click on a link.
A small knob, orange with an arrow appears.
I can then visit a few web pages then click on this button, return to the initial results of my search as soon as I want.
Moreover, I find the address bar of Safari is particularly clever! When visiting the site contains an RSS feed, a small gray rectangle containing the words "RSS" appears and by clicking you can subscribe directly to the stream. Moreover, when the browser detects a Web article, an icon "player" appears. A simple click allows you to view the article in a window pop-up type for easy reading, zoom, print or email it. My only negative about this browser: j 'had to do a search in the Help to find how to open a new tab! Indeed, when you start Safari, there is no button or link to open another tab. Certainly, the most gifted in terms of Internet may know that pressing the Ctrl and T at the same time, a new tab appears (in this case, I did not know this detail!). Otherwise, you must either click on the page icon next to the search bar (I had not looked around here ...) or right-click on a link to be opened in a new Tab. I think all this is much less intuitive than the Google Chrome browser where the tabs are clearly visible and a simple "+" can open a new one.
The latest
As I said earlier, Apple introduced Safari 5.1 in conjunction with its new operating system Mac OS X Lion. Two different versions of the browser are proposed, one for Mac (from Mac OS X 10.6.5) and one for PC (from Windows XP). The key new features:
browsing full screen (pressing the F11 key to activate or to exit this mode)
playlist (Reading List) that allows to set aside temporarily to return Web pages for future reference.
a new Download button that appears on the right of the search box and displays the progress of the download.
from the management panel of the Preferences, it is now possible to launch the browser with all the windows of the last session.
safety side, a new tab "Privacy" was added to Preferences to delete the data that was stored on the websites visited, block cookies and restrict access to websites localization services.
browser performance were enriched for a faster display of pages.
compatibility with HTML5 has been improved (new version of the composition language web pages) for better interpretation of the sites created in this language and an optimized display quality.
I think Safari is not really in competition with other browsers. It is primarily adopted by users of Apple devices, especially because it's the browser that is installed by default. Reminds me of a history of ballot screen ... Remember, following a decision of the European Commission, Microsoft had to incorporate, from March 2010, a selection screen (= ballot screen) on its computers so that the user selects it its own browser and not be "pushed" to use Internet Explorer. Providing Safari, Apple also promotes its own browser, but for now, it bored person ... Stay tuned!
